SWOOP MRI

On-site Brain Imaging with the SWOOP Portable MRI

At our clinic, we use Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to help diagnose and monitor various neurological conditions. MRI is a safe, non-invasive imaging method that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create clear, detailed images of the brain and other internal structures.

We’re proud to offer the SWOOP Portable MRI System™—the first bedside MRI of its kind. Unlike traditional MRI machines, the SWOOP system is compact and mobile, allowing us to bring imaging directly to the patient, right in the exam room or treatment area. This makes the process quicker, more comfortable, and especially convenient for patients who may have difficulty moving.

If you or a loved one has been recommended for a SWOOP MRI scan, you might have questions. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common ones. As always, feel free to reach out to your provider for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Swoop MRI safe?

Yes. The Swoop MRI system is FDA-cleared and safe for patients of all ages. It uses a low magnetic field that poses minimal risk to patients, staff, and family members nearby.

Does the MRI hurt?

Not at all. The scan is completely non-invasive. While some patients may feel slightly anxious or claustrophobic, the Swoop system’s open design helps reduce those feelings.

Can a family member stay with the patient during the scan?

Yes! One of the best features of the Swoop MRI is that loved ones can stay at the patient’s bedside for comfort and support during the procedure.

How should patients prepare for a Swoop MRI?

Patients only need to remove items around the head and neck area, this includes jewelry, hair accessories, headphones, or earbuds.

Is the machine loud?

The Swoop MRI is much quieter than traditional MRI machines. Most patients don’t need hearing protection during the scan.

What happens during the scan?

The SWOOP system is brought to your bedside. A small bridge connects the unit to your bed so you can remain comfortably in place. Your head rests gently in the scanner while the images are taken.

What happens after the scan?

A doctor will review your MRI images and go over the results with you. Based on what they find, they’ll discuss next steps and possible treatment options.

Can children use the Swoop MRI?

Yes. The system is cleared for all age groups, including infants and children. Parents or guardians can stay nearby to provide comfort during the scan.

Is it safe to use around other medical equipment?

Yes. The Swoop MRI is safe to use around most monitoring devices and infusion pumps, as long as they are outside of the designated 5-gauss zone.

How is the Swoop different from a traditional MRI?

While both systems create internal images using magnetic fields and radio waves, the Swoop uses a smaller, lower-strength magnet—making it portable and more accessible. Traditional MRI machines are large and fixed in place, but Swoop delivers high-quality diagnostic images with greater flexibility and patient comfort.
